CHESS IN RURAL SCHOOLS OF CATALONIA

November 2017- November 2018

project of Chess Education Europe and the Catalan Federation of Chess

funded by La Caixa Obra Social

MISSION

Our mission is to extend the Chess at School (Escacs a l'Escola) and Chess and English programs to the rural areas of Catalonia where they are not yet present. The project reflects the essence of our educational program: sharing the benefits and the fun of playing chess with children regardless of their social aspect and helping them become secure users of English.

During the project we reach out to primary schools located in settlements of less than 10,000 inhabitants -a figure that determines the term rural area-, from all the four provinces of Catalonia, where we aim to establish, revive or encourage chess life.

For 105 primary schools in rural areas we offer teachers' training free of charge to prepare them to introduce Escacs a l'Escola and Chess and English programs, taking the programs to their thresholds, at the local level.

Also, in order to foster chess life in rural areas and facilitate the creation of chess communities, we organize networking days at various locations all over Catalonia where a lot of fun, activities for children, mothers and fathers, and workshops for educators take place.
